The Súlur Vertical mountain race takes place in Akureyri early August each year. The race was first held in 2016 at the initiative of ultra-runner Thorbergur Ingi Jónsson. A local running club, UFA Eyrarskokk organized the race for 3 years but since 2020 it is organized by a non-profit organization Súlur Vertical.
The purpose of the association is, among other things, to promote outdoor activities and exercise, organize events, increase and improve the number of nature trails and markings in the local area of Akureyri, promote the popularity of trail running, mountain running and other activities in nature.
There are four distances, 100km, 43km, 28km and 19km. The shorter distances start in Kjarnaskógi, while the 100km race starts at Godafoss. All races end in the city center of Akureyri.
